The Shift from Centre of Excellence to Centre for Enablement

The Shift from Centre of Excellence to Centre for Enablement

This post was originally published in 2024. Some details may have changed since then.

The use of Centre of Enablements will grow.

The Centre of Excellence creates bottlenecks. 👎🏽 Here's the difference.

While CoE’s focus on centralized expertise and controlled governance, Centre for Enablement (C4E’s) create decentralized knowledge sharing, self-service, and continuous integration across various departments.

The CoE model has been the traditional approach, focusing on centralizing expertise within the organization. It leverages a core group of experts to develop, deliver, and maintain IT assets with the aim of achieving organizational excellence through best practices and high-quality assets.

But, this centralized approach often creates challenges - like the inability to meet high demand for access and expertise.

This leads to delays in projects and a potential increase in technical debt due to the gap between business expectations and delivery.

Centre for Enablement (C4E):

On the other hand, the ‘Centre for Enablement’ represents a transformative approach. It adopts a federated, self-service model. It emphasizes the provision of reusable and composable assets like connectors, API fragments, and APIs.

This model is designed to empower teams across the organization to use these assets for agile, cost-effective, and innovative solutions. It democratizes access to resources, fostering a culture of agility and innovation.

The difference between a Centre of Excellence vs Centre for Enablement is more than a structural change - it represents a fundamental shift in mindset. A transition from a centralized control of expertise to a more decentralized and empowering approach.

If you want agility, innovation, and adaptability in a fast-paced business environment it’s worth looking at.
